Don’t Let this Face Fool You
He’s not even a year old, but Tofu carries himself like the oldest, most unimpressed cat in the house. He’s also the boldest. He’s smaller than every other cat here, but that’s never stopped him from holding his ground, even with Queso.
Underneath the serious expression, he’s actually gentle and easygoing most of the time. The wild streak shows up in bursts, usually right before he crashes for the night.

Persian fur is a full time job, and Tofu has made it very clear he did not sign up for that job. Brushing him is a negotiation he never agrees to. Sometimes it is a bath day. Sometimes it is a hold him gently and brush as fast as humanly possible day. If a knot gets too bad to work out safely, we shave it rather than fight him over it, because a slightly uneven patch of fur is a much better outcome than stressing him out trying to force a brush through it.
We learned that lesson the hard way. The night we brought Tofu home, we were trimming out a stubborn knot and I accidentally cut him with the scissors. He did not even react, but we still rushed him to the emergency vet, three stitches and a staple later, and an $800 bill and a lot of guilt on my end. The vet techs said he was the best patient they had all night, purring and making biscuits through the entire thing while I sat there an absolute wreck. That pretty much sums up Tofu.
